Is Heating Oil the same product as Off Road diesel? Yes. Heating Oil, Off Road diesel, and On Road diesel are all identical products in NJ.
They are identical 15ppm low sulfur diesel.
Heating Oil and Off Road have a dye in them that turns the diesel red. On Road is what it should look like, which is clear or lime greenish.
In the past Heating Oil was allowed to have significantly higher sulfur content.
Today in NJ that is not the case and everything must be 15ppm sulfur, or “ultra low sulfur”. Now the fuel that burns in your home furnace is the same product that is burned in on the road diesel engines. The red dye is added at the terminals/wholesaler because it is sold with no sales tax. A red product, bought cheaply for off the road or heating use, if put into a fuel tank for on the road use, would be easily identified by law enforcement. If you try and mix a little bit of the cheaper red fuel with the pure clear fuel you get pink fuel. That is also easy to identify.
So, Off Road diesel is 15ppm ultra low sulfur diesel, and is now the same product as Heating Oil, in NJ. In some states they still sell 500ppm sulfur diesel as Heating Oil and have the 15ppm fuel for on and off road uses.
